Why visit Wayanad

Wayanad sits on a forested plateau at 700 to 2,100 metres in northern Kerala, bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It is less developed than Munnar, less crowded, and rewards travellers who enjoy active outdoor experiences. Where Munnar is about viewpoints from a car window, Wayanad is about getting out and walking — through a 6,000-year-old cave with petroglyphs, up a hill to a heart-shaped lake, around a dam with kayaks, or into a sanctuary at sunrise looking for elephants.

It is also a district, not a single town. The main towns — Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery, and Mananthavady — are spaced 25 kilometres apart, with resorts and homestays scattered across the plateau. This means you spend more time driving between sights than in Munnar, but the landscape changes as you go: tea estates near Kalpetta, paddy fields and forest near Sulthan Bathery, coffee plantations in the north.

Wayanad suits trekkers, families with older children, wildlife enthusiasts, and travellers who want a quieter Kerala hill experience without compromising on infrastructure. It is not ideal for honeymooners looking for the "tea estate honeymoon resort" feel — Munnar does that better.

Best places to visit in Wayanad

Wayanad's main sights are spread across the district. Group them by area when planning — northern (Banasura, Pookode), eastern (Edakkal, Sulthan Bathery), and the wildlife sanctuaries on the Karnataka border.

Things to do in Wayanad

  • Trek Chembra Peak — book the permit a day ahead. The full peak summit is closed off; the heart-lake plateau is the official endpoint.
  • Take a sunrise jeep safari in Muthanga or Tholpetty — book the 7 am slot for the best wildlife chance.
  • Walk through a coffee plantation — most plantation homestays around Mananthavady offer guided walks; many include the harvest in November–February.
  • Visit a spice plantation — cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon grow on the lower slopes. Guided walks are 60–90 minutes.
  • Kayak on Banasura reservoir — single and double kayaks available at the dam (~₹500/~US$6 for 30 minutes).
  • Try Kerala-style biryani at Sulthan Bathery — the town's Muslim heritage means good Malabar biryani and pathiri.
  • Stay in a treehouse — Wayanad has several certified treehouse properties at the canopy level (₹6,000–₹15,000/~US$72–180 per night).

Best time to visit Wayanad

October to February — the comfortable season

Cool (18–25 °C), dry, with clear mornings. The best window for treks, wildlife safaris, and viewpoints. Pricing peaks around Christmas–New Year and Pongal/Makar Sankranti weekend.

March to May — warmer, fewer crowds

Daytime 24–30 °C, less humid than the coast. Wildlife sightings improve as water sources shrink in the forest. Most treks remain open.

June to September — southwest monsoon

Heavy rain, dense fog, dramatic green landscapes. Most treks close (Chembra usually shut). Waterfalls are at their most powerful, but visibility on hill drives can be very low. Best for travellers who love rain and quiet.

Quick pick For a first Wayanad trip, aim for November to early February. October still has post-monsoon greenery, January–February has the driest trails.

How many days do you need in Wayanad?

Three days, two nights is the standard. Day 1 for Edakkal Caves and Banasura Dam, day 2 for Chembra trek and Soochipara Falls, day 3 for a sanctuary safari before driving out. Two days is doable if you skip the trek. Four nights makes sense if you want to add Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary's deeper trails, visit Thirunelli temple, or stay at a coffee plantation.
