Why visit Alleppey
Alleppey is the unofficial capital of Kerala's backwaters — a network of canals, lakes, and rivers stretching across the Kuttanad region, much of it below sea level. The town itself is unremarkable, but the surrounding waterways carry over a thousand kettuvallam (literally "tied boats") that have been converted into floating accommodation. A night on one is, for most first-time Kerala visitors, the single most memorable experience of the trip.
Unlike Munnar, Alleppey is not about ticking off sights. The point is the slow cruise itself: rice paddies passing at walking pace, Chinese fishing nets on the banks, kingfishers diving, families bathing at canal steps, and meals served on board as the boat parks for the night by a coconut-palm bank. It is also the easiest way to see how rural Kerala actually lives, because the backwaters thread through villages tourists otherwise never reach.
Alleppey works well for couples, families with older children, honeymooners, and anyone wanting to break up a city or hill-station itinerary with a slow day. It does not work for travellers expecting non-stop activity or those prone to seasickness in confined spaces.

Kuttanad rice fields
"The rice bowl of Kerala" — vast paddy fields below sea level, separated from water by dykes. A drive through Kainakary or Champakulam gives the best views.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race
A spectacular snake-boat race held on Punnamada Lake in August or September. Hundred-rower boats sprinting; one of Kerala's most photographed events.
Marari Beach
